W. Gene Sturm, age 89 of Bremen, peacefully passed away Sunday July 14, 2013 at Emeritus of Chestnut Hill in Columbus, Ohio. He was born April 8, 1924 in Columbus Ohio to the late Glen and Marie (McCandlish) Sturm. Gene joined the US Navy to serve in World War II where he served on the USS Genesee, AOG-8. As a veteran, Gene became a life member of the American Legion where he served as Post Commander of the Oscar McVey Post 20, Commander of the 8th District and Ohio Department Assistant Sargent at Arms and served as Chef De Gare in the 40/8. He was a member of the Bremen City Council. Gene’s career included working in oil fields and in later years he was a self-employed building contractor and built many homes in the area. His favorite pastimes included dancing with his wife, camping with friends and family, playing cards with his friends at North Berne, watching the Reds play, and woodworking. Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Thelma L. (Grove); brother Glen (Pat) Sturm Jr. and sister Sally Jo Sturm. He is survived by sister; Marilyn (George) Docter; children, Steve (Lori) Sturm of Dublin, Ohio, John (Eve) Sturm of Yellow Springs, Ohio, Miki Sturm (Howard Tilley) of High Point, North Carolina, Sandy (Brian) Durnell of Gahanna, Ohio and Linda Sturm of Gahanna; 7 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. The family extends special thanks and gratitude to the staff at Emeritus at Chestnut Hill and Acclaim Hospice. Graveside services and military honors will be held Friday, July 19 at 2 PM at Grandview Cemetery, Bremen, Ohio with Reverend David Diamond officiating. A celebration of Gene’s life will follow at the American Legion Post 20, 201 North Broad Street, Bremen until 7pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Gene Sturm to the Oscar McVey Post 20, PO Box 49, Bremen, Ohio 43107 or the Alzheimer’s Association of Central Ohio, 3380 Tremont Road, Columbus Ohio 43221.
