W. Dean Scholl, age 95, of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 surrounded by his family.
Dean was born February 1, 1927 in Bremen, Ohio to the late Reason and Elva (Brown) Scholl and was the youngest of their 8 children.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and each of his siblings and their spouses. Kermit (Dorothy) Scholl, Frederick (Betty) Scholl, Raymond (Lois) Scholl, Merle (Phyllis) Scholl, Mabel Scholl, Eilleen (Arthur) Stemen, and Lelia (Ralph) Morehead. Also preceding him in death was son-in-law, Larry Tibbals.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Wandalea (Dittoe) Scholl; two daughters, and one son-in-law, Linda Tibbals of Findlay, Ohio and Deanna (Larry) Ward of Findlay, Ohio; one granddaughter, Heather Redemann of Dallas, North Carolina; and three great-grandchildren, River, Sylvan and Juniper Redemann. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Nancy Quick of Lancaster. Additionally he will be missed by many nieces and nephews.
Following graduation from Rushcreek Memorial High School in 1944, Dean enlisted in the US Coast Guard during World War II. After his discharge from the Coast Guard, Dean married Wandalea Dittoe on September 28, 1946. Dean and Wanda celebrated the 75th wedding anniversary in 2021. Dean worked at Standard Glass and Erickson Glass Works located in Bremen, Ohio. He worked in the plaster trade in Bremen and in Columbus, Ohio. Dean and Wanda eventually moved to Columbus for work and to raise their family. Dean worked many years at Potter Lumber Company in Worthington, Ohio and retired in 1992. They moved to Lancaster, Ohio a few years prior to retirement. Dean was a devoted member of Bremen United Methodist Church. Dean was a loving and caring husband and a supportive and nurturing father. He loved his granddaughter and great-grandchildren dearly and they always brought enjoyment to his life. Over the years, some of his past times were gardening, bowling, golfing, watching sports and card playing with family and friends. He enjoyed going to auctions/estate sales to look for collectibles from the 1800’s. He also enjoyed searching for unique pieces of Erickson glassware.
However, Dean’s true passion was to give back to his country and community. He belonged to numerous service organizations including life membership in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Amvets, Voiture Local 498 (40 & 8). He also had membership with Fraternal Order of Eagles, Bremen Lodge #608 of the Free & Accepted Masons, Lancaster Burial Squad and the Lancaster Lions Club and volunteered several years with the Ohio State Highway Patrol Auxillary. Dean tirelessly supported veterans after his discharge from the Coast Guard. He held all the statewide posts in the American Legion and was State of Ohio Commander for the American Legion in 1975 – 1976. In his later years he continued to support veterans by working as an investigator and commissioner for the Fairfield County Veterans Service Commission. He worked with the Chillicothe Veterans Administration and assisted in bringing a Veterans Clinic to Lancaster, Ohio. Dean was honored in 2021 br, Ohio. Dean was honored in 2021 by the Bremen American Legion Post 20 as one of their Hometown Heroes. Dean also served on the Lancaster City Council from 1991 – 2001.
The family extends a special appreciation to the caregivers that provided care and support in the home setting these last several years. A special thanks to the caregivers this past year that provided services with such compassion, respect and dignity. In addition, a thank you to the services provided by Fairhope Hospice & Palliative Care.
Friends may visit with family members Thursday, August 18th from 5 – 8 PM at Morgan Funeral Home, 124 Fort Street, Bremen. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 19th at 10 AM at Morgan Funeral Home with Pastor Linda Ward officiating. Graveside services and military rites will follow at Grandview Cemetery.
