Timothy Howard Byers, 81, passed away on October 15, 2022, at Fairfield Medical Center. He was born October 5, 1941, in Lancaster, Ohio. He grew up on the rough and tumbled westside of Lancaster, in Cedar Heights, and was a graduate of Lancaster High School. After graduating from high school, he worked as an Electrician (Master Electrician) in/around Lancaster for 60+ years. If you happen to live in Hunters Trace, or the Lenmar addition in Lancaster, Byers Electric would have been responsible for wiring those houses when they were initially built. Later in life he worked for Altons Foundry, Good Builders, Drummond Construction and Claypool Electric.
Timothy is survived by his wife of 59 1/2 years, Nancy Sue (Butcher) Byers, whom he married June 5, 1963; daughter, Cathy Sue (Louis) Agosta; son, Timothy David (Lori) Byers; 4 granddaughters (Sucora, Nikki, Natalie, and Keri); one great-granddaughter (Rhiannon); his sister, Patty (Bud) Azbell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Timothy is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Virginia Byers.
Timothy was an avid outdoorsman. During his youth it was not uncommon to see him sneak out after school to hunt the fields west of Lancaster on a quest for small game, or simply enjoying an adventure that only he knew about. To say hunting (deer, coon, turkey, or any other animal you can think of), fishing, or trapping were his passions would be an extreme understatement. He could recall a deer hunting trip in the ‘50s (to Pennsylvania) or fishing trip (to Virginia, Texas, or Canada) as late as 2019 with amazing clarity. He was especially proud of the fact that in his lifetime he’d killed 99 deer and was hoping to reach 100 before he had to quit. Despite his failing health and bitterly cold temperatures, he never gave up on that quest. As late as 2022, he was still hunting snow geese in Missouri. Ever the skilled marksman, he bagged a snow goose on that trip – one shot, one kill. He was a modern-day Mountain Man!
Fishing… Boy did he like fishing. If he knew a trip to Lac Suel, Canada was coming, he’d start packing, and repacking, months in advance. He couldn’t wait to go. He fished lakes he could drive to and some so remote that he had to fly-in via a floatplane and land on the lake. Bass, Walleye, Northern Pike, Crappie were all on the menu! In 2019 he was fortunate enough to fulfill a lifelong desire…to hunt a black bear while on a fishing trip. While he didn’t get a bear, he was able to see several as large as 400 lbs up close and personal (less than 25 yards away while he was sitting in a ground blind). Yikes!
Motorcycle racing – Timothy was a National Sportsman Hill Climbing Champion in 1966-67. He was known for his incredibly fast purple BSAs (500cc and 650cc class) and his good sportsmanship. His racing career spanned more than a decade from the late 50’s until the early 70’s and ended with a crash, a broken leg, and an ultimatum from his wife. He chose wisely and hung up his helmet immediately… and forever.
Family and friends – Timothy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. If you needed a helping hand, whether you be family or friend, he was your go-to guy. He would give you the shirt off his back, and often did even at his own expense.
He lived a full life and lived it to the fullest!!!
