Russell Glenn Shanks Jr., 79, of Baltimore, Ohio passed peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 11, 2026. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio on August 13, 1946.
Russ was a 1964 graduate of Liberty Union High School and almost immediately following his graduation served in the US Air Force from August 1964 - January 1967 in Vietnam. Upon his return from honorably serving his country, he began working for the Ohio Paper Board and faithfully worked over 40 years as a maintenance mechanic during the papermill's many changes up until his retirement. Russ worked tirelessly alongside his wife, Phyllis, raising their family and fostering over 400 children and infants in their years together. Phyllis was awarded the title of "Fairfield County's Mother" making Russ the official "Fairfield County's Father." Russ was a member of the Baltimore VFW Post 3761 and Fairfield Fish & Game. In the moments he had to relax, he took pleasure in hunting and especially fishing.
Russ is survived by his children, Matthew Shanks, Kim (Eric) Coffman and Jamie (Jason) Wollenberg; grandchildren, Brandt (Katie) and Little Bean coming in October and Kortnie (Gavin) and their expectant adopted children, Connor (Abby) and Macie (Mason); sister-in-law, Bernita; longtime friend, Clara; his dog, MAX; several nieces and nephews; foster children; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Ann Shanks on February 19, 2024; infant daughter, Amy Lynn Shanks; son, Raesean Justin Shanks; parents, Russell Glenn Sr and Dorothy Marie (Golden) Shanks; and siblings, Butch Charles Shanks and Regina Bowen.
Graveside services will take place 11 AM Friday, April 17th Floral Hills Memory Gardens. A celebration of Russ's life will be Sunday, April 19th from 3 - 5 PM at the Christ United Methodist Church, 700 South Main Street, Baltimore, Ohio. Come hungry and ready to share memories!
