Norma Jean “Jeannie” (Smith) Flowers, 87 years of Lancaster, went home to her Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 26, 2016. Jeannie died peacefully at the Pickering House after time with family and friends. Jeannie was born June 20, 1929 to Russell Paul and Mary Charlotte (Schneider) Smith of Fairfield County.
Jeannie spent much of her life as a devoted caregiver. She cheerfully cared for her family and extended family, most notably, her son Jeff of the home for 30 years. She enjoyed “digging in the dirt” producing bounties of vegetables and flowers. Her hands were always busy and very creative, making many cherished keepsakes. A 1948 graduate of Lancaster High School, she was the “donut lady” and worked the candy counter at Kresge’s in downtown Lancaster. Long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, she was active in the women’s bible study group, altar committee, Sunday school and vacation bible school.
Jeannie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 68 years, Leo Richard Flowers, son, Greg Flowers and daughter, Becky (Mike) Scholl; grandchildren; Andrea (Scott) Anderson, Gwen (Ryan) Fletcher, Eric (Elizabeth) Flowers, Jason Scholl and Jennifer (Shane) Sowers; great grandchildren; Alexandria and Nolan Anderson, Ella and Zane Fletcher, Caraline Flowers and Lee Sowers. She is also survived by brother Ronald Smith, sisters Vicki Bauman and Charlotte (Rob) Dennis, sisters-in-law Helen Bowers and Laverna Ansel and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and son Jeff Flowers, sisters and brothers-in-law Jane Smith, Ralph Bauman, Howard Bowers, Tom Ansel, and Neal and OraMae Ackers.
The family would like to sincerely thank the Hospice doctors, nurses, and staff for their visits and loving care of Jeannie at home and during her stay at the Pickering House. Special thanks go to Sally Dillon whose daily presence was a great source of support and love.
