Janice Evelyn Riegler Schmitz, 94, of Lancaster, died peacefully at home Saturday, June 16, 2012. She was born May 18, 1918 in Marion, Ohio the daughter of the late Jacob and Amalia (Vetter) Riegler. She was raised in the Cleveland area and was a 1936 graduate of Lakewood High School. She has lived in the Bremen area since 1946. Janice was a longtime member of the Bremen United Methodist Church, the NRA and Farm Bureau Council #34. She was a 4-H advisor for the Golden Spur 4-H Saddle Club for 47 years, as well as a long-time Girl Scout leader and was instrumental in the purchase of Echo Hills Girl Scout Camp. She enjoyed bowling and was active with the Fairfield Union Athletic Boosters and Olivedale bowling leagues. Janice was well-known for her Christmas cookies and decorated cakes. She is survived by her daughters, Sue Ellen Schmitz, Jacqueline (The Rev. Michael) Thomas and Billie Lee Schmitz; grandchildren, Christopher, Erik and Scott Thomas; great- granddaughter, Genesis; several nieces and nephews; and her faithful boxer, Babe. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Schmitz; and sister, Marvis Mayhew. Her family is most grateful for the care by Dr. Robert Sprouse, the FMC 5th floor staff, Main Street Terrace, FairHoPe Hospice and the Interim Health Care Aides that made it possible for Janice to be at home this last month. A visitation will take place Tuesday, June 19th from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Morgan Funeral Home, 124 Fort Street, Bremen. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 AM at the Bremen United Methodist Church, 205 N. Walnut Street with Rev. Deborah Nance officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Contributions may be made in Janice’s memory to the Bremen United Methodist Church Youth Ministry.
