David Wylie Merckle, 71, of Logan, Ohio, passed away on June 19, 2026. He was born on July
21, 1954, in Lancaster, Ohio, to Dolores Maxine (Straits) Merckle and Delbert Eugene "Gene"
Merckle.
David grew up and spent most of his life in Bremen, Ohio, and was a 1972 graduate of Fairfield
Union High School. While he enjoyed life on "the farm," he also had an inquisitive and
adventurous spirit. He loved music, always wanting to know the lyrics and deeper meaning
behind songs, trying new foods (especially in New York while visiting his daughter), and playing
blackjack. He patiently awaited the fresh, garden-ripe tomatoes of summer and lived for the
fall, when Ohio State Buckeyes football season would begin.
David had a playful sense of humor and appreciated the simple things in life. He treasured the
1974 Ford Bronco he bought just after graduating from high school and often reminisced about
"the good ol' days." Over the last year, he frequently joked that he wished his cousin's car
would blow up so she would have to buy a brand-new Bronco-one he fully expected to ride
in.
Above all, David was a father filled with pride. He kept every note, scribble, drawing, and card
his daughter ever gave him. He never missed one of her sporting events while she was growing
up, later joined her in exploring the cities where she lived, and was always eager to hear about
what she was creating, her travels, her cats, and her life. He was endlessly proud of the person
she had become.
He is survived by his daughter, Heather Merckle; his sister-in-law, Darlene; his nephew, Delbert
"Bert" Merckle (Yolanda) and their children; his niece, Sara Merckle; and numerous cousins.
The family extends a special thank-you to his cousin, Susannah Fisher, for the generosity, care,
and friendship she shared with David over the last year.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxine and Gene Merckle, and his brother, Mark.
Private arrangements will be held with the family.
