Carl B. Stemen, 90, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at the Pickering House in Lancaster. He was born September 23, 1922 in Bremen, Ohio the son of Frank and Flossie (Moyer) Stemen. He was a decorated veteran of the United States Air Force serving in World War II where he piloted his B-17 Bomber through 32 combat missions and the first 3 humanitarian food drop missions into Holland in 1945. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of Major. He worked for Fairfield Printing Company (The Bremen Derrick) from 1946 till 1964 and had worked at Cyril Scott for 20 years. He was a member of the 34th Bomb Group Association, the Oscar McVey American Legion, Post 20 and the Bremen United Methodist Church. Carl is survived by his wife of 70 years, Peg (Swinehart) Stemen, whom he married February 4, 1943; daughter, Debbie (Tom) George; son, Kim (Cathy) Stemen; 4 grandchildren, Betsy (Steve) Sesslar, Lance (Robin) George, Adrienne Stemen and Corinne Stemen; 3 great-grandchildren, Case, Colton and Elle George; sister-in-law, Eileen Stemen; and nephews, Burton Stemen, Ron Stemen, Dean and Larry Frost. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edwin and Arthur Stemen; sister, Ruth Frost; infant son, Stephen Brooks Stemen; neice, Lee Ann Stemen and nephew, Greg Stemen. A time to visit with family will be held Sunday, June 30, 2013 from 2 - 3 PM in the Bremen United Methodist Church, 205 North Walnut Street. A celebration of life service will take place at 3 PM with Rev. Deborah Nance officiating. Graveside services and military honors will follow at Grandview Cemetery, Bremen. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made in Carl’s memory to the Cardiac Rehab Unit of Fairfield Medical Center,c/o Fairfield Medical Center Foundation, 401 North Ewing Street, Lancaster, Ohio 43130, the Bremen United Methodist Church or the Oscar McVeigh American Legion, Post 20, 201 North Broad Street, Bremen, Ohio 43107 .
