Bernice Lorraine Detwiler, beloved teacher, devoted Christian, and cherished community member, peacefully entered her heavenly home on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at age 98.

Born June 22, 1927, in Monongah, West Virginia, to Grover and Mary "Mame" (Yost) Spragg, Bernice developed a lifelong love of learning and service. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Fairmont State College and moved to Bremen, Ohio, in 1954.

Bernice taught in the Fairfield Union School District for 30 years. Her gentle wisdom and patience shaped generations of students. Even in retirement, she led by example, living with kindness, humility, and grace.

A lifelong Methodist and devoted follower of Jesus, Bernice was a faithful member of Bremen Community Methodist Church for nearly 70 years. Her quiet faith and generous spirit reflected her deep commitment to service.

She is survived by her stepdaughters; Jo Ann Shahan; step granddaughter, Ruth (Todd) Shahan-Beery and her children, Miranda, Addison, Karissa and Nikolas; Jennifer (Jim) Young and her children, Mark (Heather) Shahan and Aaron (Jeanie) Shahan and step daughter, Pam Hureau; her caring niece, Holly Cattrell-whom she lovingly called "the daughter my brother had for me"; and many nieces and nephews, including her dear friend Mary Lou Wagner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elton Detwiler; her parents; and siblings Gerald (Esther), Geraldine (Carl), and Harold (Karen).

Bernice's family extends heartfelt thanks to Capital City Hospice, especially nurse Julie and chaplain Gary, and the staff at Carroll Place Assisted Living for their compassionate care.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 29, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Capital City Hospice, Carroll Place Assisted Living, or Bremen Community Methodist Church.

Bernice's life was a quiet testament to faith, love, and the lasting influence of a teacher's heart. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
