Clarence Eugene “Red” Miller Sr., 89, of Bremen, died Tuesday, January 6, 2015 in his home. He was born February 22, 1925 in Perry County, Ohio the son of Edward and Mary (Keister) Miller-Schmelzer. Red was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II. He lived in the Bremen area since he was 9 years old. He was a farmer and the owner/operator of Red Miller Sr. Trucking. He was a member of Colfax Lutheran Church, American Legion, Post 20, Bremen and VFW Post 1985, Lancaster. He enjoyed Ohio State Football and hearing about all the sports games his grandkids played. Red is survived by his children, Ruth C. Miller, Barbara J. Miller, Clarence (Connie) Miller Jr. and Mike (Diane) Miller; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sister, Judy (Francis) Sherlock; sister-in-law, Ruth Quillen; brother-in-law, Bernard Mumford. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie F. Miller in 2002; his parents; step-father, Gervase Schmelzer; sisters, Kate Fraley and Emerentina Schmelzer; brothers, Homer Miller, who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge, WWII and Hugh Schmelzer;
sisters-in-law, Mamie Harvey, Maggie Knight, Mae Downhour and Lucille Mumford; brothers-in-law, Stanley, Chancey, Lennie, Lonnie and Everett Wade. The family would like to thank the Charles Wylie VA Clinic on James Road and Dr. Ohr of the Havener Eye Institute OSU and his staff for their service since 2008, after Clarence’s eye surgery, and again in October of 2014, allowing Red to see much better. A special thank you to grandson, Mike Miller Jr. for all the help he gave his aunt in keeping the farm running as his grandpa would have wanted him too. A visitation will be held Friday from 12 – 2 PM in the Morgan Funeral Home, 124 Fort Street, Bremen. Funeral services take place at 2 PM with Diana Gugel officiating. Interment and military honors will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Contributions in Red’s memory may be made to the Havener Eye Institute, Attn. Dr. Ohr.
